Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek, Salt & Straw set out with a humble ice cream cart serving eight flavors, and a mission to be the happiest part of someone’s day. The company now counts three Portland scoop shops, three Los Angeles scoop shops, and the newly opened Wiz Bang Bar at Pine Street Market, Salt & Straw’s soft serve dessert bar serving up fresh spins on the childhood swirl, sundaes, novelties, and more.
“Since ice cream is all about happiness and can be such a great day changer, we thought National Ice Cream Day would be a great excuse to share some love and happiness and take a moment to connect with each other over something we can all enjoy together.,” says founder Kim Malek.
Over the past five years, Salt & Straw has become beloved for its handmade, small batch ice cream made using the best local, organic and sustainable ingredients. With an incredible attention to detail, every ingredient is made from scratch in the Salt & Straw kitchen, from freshly baked cookies and gooey caramel to rich ganache and Grandma Malek’s almond brittle. Creative classic flavors like Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, are joined by seasonal flavor menus that rotate every four weeks. Founded to create great neighborhood places that bring people together, Salt & Straw’s strong community roots and dedication to giving back drives everything they do, from collaborating with artisans and farmers, to actively supporting local schools and raising awareness for issues like childhood hunger.
