Located in the Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Penn Quarter, fast casual restaurant Farmbird’s second location, designed by local architecture and design firm //3877, marks the official expansion of the brand. Characterized by the use of fresh ingredients, robust flavors, and warm hospitality, Farmbird’s culinary values were strongly embraced in the design program, which is defined by the relationship between natural materials and machine-crafted elements.

 

Throughout the restaurant, //3877’s design is defined by a delicate balance of softer wood pieces, heavier industrial metal elements, and pops of texture and color, that together convey the spirit of the brand. Spanning 2,900 square feet, Farmbird’s layout promotes community and a sense of belonging; the open-service counter invites customers to take part in the culinary process, previewing the action as their meals are prepared. Similarly, the large show kitchen promotes transparency of technique, showcasing Farmbird’s dedication to a quality cooking process.

 

The bi-level dining space is defined by the large, custom-designed central banquette that features seating on both sides. Built-in counters at the storefront windows are dining height for accessibility and to keep the views into the space open while still being utilized. In addition, a myriad of two-top tables create a flexible and casual dining experience for solo diners or small groups alike. Dining zones are further defined by the variation of flooring material; upon entering the restaurant, the concrete floors create a rugged, pared-back vibe, contrasting the warm, wood-like tile in the upper dining area and surrounding the kitchen.

 

The design team prioritized the use of authentic materials—hardwood, natural stone, and steel— throughout the space to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Graphic tiles and funky wall coverings add contrasting flair and flavor. Drawing inspiration from the Farmbird brand, straw-colored tones, deep blues and ‘hot spice’ hues contrast warm wood tones, dark metal and light stones to create a bright and homey experience. The dining tables—also specified in the original H Street Corridor location—complement the millwork, which is composed of PaperStone product, a durable, eco-friendly material made of recycled paper products that are impervious to moisture and bacteria growth.

 

A focal art piece, located in the queuing area, was created using a collection of wooden spoons, gathered by the Farmbird team from the kitchens of friends and family, further celebrating the brand’s home-style values. The design team also took a thoughtful approach to the treatment of the journey towards the restroom, creating unexpected design moments. For example, smiling goats feature on the wallcovering above the modern, colorful wainscot, leading patrons to the restrooms. Larger format, full-height tile wraps from the floor all the way up the wall. This is contrasted with a bright and colorful wallcovering—also by Astek Wallcovering—that features a graphic representation of fruits and vegetables, custom-created for the Farmbird brand.

 

Throughout the entire restaurant, architectural and decorative lighting is clean and simple. While a series of decorative glass dome fixtures highlight the path of travel—between the entrance and through to the service line—during the day, abundant natural light pervades the space.

 

Defined by its open, spacious layout that allows for plenty of circulation, the fun treatment of color, and flexible seating arrangements, Farmbird’s new location provides an eclectic aesthetic that underscores the brand’s key hospitality value: authenticity in design, food, and good company.
