New Malt Shoppe Ice Cream from Blue Bell too thick for a straw

New Malt Shoppe Ice Cream from Blue Bell too thick for a strawThe best tasting chocolate malt is too thick for a straw. Trust us when we say you’ll need a bowl and spoon for this one. Blue Bell has put its own spin on this old fashioned treat with new Malt Shoppe Ice Cream.

Malt Shoppe is a tasty chocolate malt ice cream loaded with milk chocolate-covered malted milk balls.

“There was a time when the whole family hopped in the car and went out for burgers, fries and malts,” said Paul Kruse, Blue Bell CEO and president. “And that was a big treat for everyone. You can still find a few old fashioned malt shops or soda fountains but they are not as common today. We created our Malt Shoppe Ice Cream to capture the unique flavor of a malted milkshake. For an extra kick we’ve mixed in crunchy, chocolate-coated malted milk balls.”

The malted milkshake was invented in the 1920’s by Ivar “Pop” Coulson, an employee at a Chicago Walgreens soda fountain. He had the idea to add ice cream to his already popular malted milk drink. The tasty frozen treat became an instant hit.

Nearly a century later, many people still wonder what separates a malt from a shake.  The answer is simple. A milkshake recipe in its basic form includes ice cream and milk and if you add malted milk powder it becomes a malted milkshake.

Malt Shoppe Ice Cream will debut in stores in September in the pint and half gallon sizes. Also look for Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream and Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream in your grocer’s freezer section in September.
