A short history of the Aldi brand

Even though Aldi is a staple American discount store, the brand traces its history all the way back to 1946’ Germany. Two brothers, Theo and Karl Albrecth, first created their Aldi brand starting at a family-owned grocery store and quickly expanded.

Though the brothers disagreed and eventually split into two groups in 1960, both brands continued to grow and first international stores appeared in 1967. The first Aldi in the United States was opened in 1976 by one of the brothers, while the other brother’s company bought the Trader Joe’s brand in 1979 – a tiny brand back then – and quickly expanded, with over 500 locations built to this day.
