The consolidation of the food supply chain is accelerating—and this time it's crossing the border. GrubMarket, the AI-powered technology enabler that has spent years digitizing the American food supply chain, has completed its acquisition of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery Inc. ("SPUD"), one of Western Canada's most established online grocery services.

Announced July 21, 2026, the deal expands GrubMarket's B2C eCommerce footprint into two key Canadian markets—British Columbia and Alberta—and folds a beloved, locally rooted brand into one of the largest private food eCommerce companies in the world.

A Local-First Grocery Brand With Deep Roots

Founded in Vancouver in 1997 as Small Potatoes Urban Delivery, SPUD has grown into a leader in online grocery across Western Canada by doing one thing exceptionally well: connecting consumers with high-quality food sourced from hundreds of local farmers, ranchers, fishers, and artisan producers.

The operational backbone is substantial. SPUD runs three distribution centers totaling more than 85,000 square feet across Burnaby, Calgary, and Edmonton, supported by a custom fleet of refrigerated vans that protect product quality all the way to the customer's doorstep. Its catalog spans fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, and pantry staples, plus prepared meals and artisanal goods.

What sets SPUD apart in a crowded grocery-delivery market is its supply chain philosophy. Through long-standing relationships with more than 800 local farmers, producers, and food entrepreneurs, the company has built one of Western Canada's most differentiated local food ecosystems—one that delivers freshness while supporting regional agriculture and reducing supply chain complexity.

Sustainability Baked Into the Model

SPUD's commitment to responsible operations runs deep, from using reusable bins to cut waste, to a sourcing strategy designed to bolster the local farming economy while easing the environmental toll of fragmented supply chains. Its sourcing team holds every product to rigorous standards for both quality and environmental responsibility.

Notably, SPUD's brick-and-mortar retail banners—Blush Lane Organic Market and Be Fresh Market—were not part of the transaction and will continue to operate separately under ownership backed by Third Eye Capital (TEC), the Canadian capital provider that previously backed SPUD.

Why GrubMarket Wants In

For GrubMarket, the acquisition is a clean fit with its strategic playbook: expand B2C reach, acquire trusted regional brands, and layer proprietary technology on top of proven operations.

"SPUD has built an impressive and trusted brand with a loyal customer base that values local sourcing, quality, and sustainability. We are excited to combine GrubMarket's extensive network, resources, and technology with SPUD's established operations and strong presence throughout Western Canada. Furthermore, our values align; like GrubMarket, SPUD has leveraged its successes to support local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices. This acquisition allows us to continue expanding our presence in Canada and strengthen our position in the food supply chain industry," said Mike Xu, CEO of GrubMarket.

SPUD's leadership frames the deal as a growth accelerator rather than an exit.

"This transaction represents an exciting new chapter for SPUD. Our mission has always been to build a more sustainable food system by connecting Western Canadian communities with high quality, responsibly-sourced food. With GrubMarket's technology, scale, and operational expertise, we believe SPUD is well positioned to amplify its impact, strengthen its support for local farmers and producers, and reach more households that share our values," said Claude Church, CEO of SPUD.

In a further signal of alignment, Third Eye Capital elected to participate in GrubMarket's Series H preferred stock financing—capital earmarked to support ongoing modernization of the food supply chain through GrubMarket's AI-enabled product suite.

The Technology Stack Coming to SPUD

SPUD will continue to be run by its experienced team, preserving continuity for customers and partners. But as part of GrubMarket's portfolio, it gains access to a deep bench of proprietary, AI-powered tools:

  • WholesaleWare — a SaaS ERP platform offering financial management, sales support, inventory management, lot traceability, grower accounting, and automated routing and logistics.
  • GrubAssist AI — a suite of agentic enterprise AI assistants delivering insights, intelligent analysis, and workflow automation.
  • Orders IO — a custom-branded mobile and online ordering eCommerce solution.
  • GrubPay — a digital payments platform built specifically for the food supply chain.

Why It Matters

For food, beverage, and hospitality operators—and especially for procurement directors and institutional buyers watching supply chain consolidation—this deal is a case study in where the industry is heading: local sourcing and AI-driven logistics are no longer competing priorities. GrubMarket is betting they reinforce each other.

The practical takeaways:

  • Local sourcing is scaling, not shrinking. SPUD's 800-plus producer network shows that a differentiated local food ecosystem can be an acquisition-worthy asset. Operators who build transparent, local supply relationships are building durable competitive value.
  • Technology is the consolidation lever. WholesaleWare, GrubAssist AI, and GrubPay signal that traceability, automated logistics, and payments modernization are becoming table stakes. Buyers should expect faster, more transparent ordering from consolidated suppliers—and evaluate their own tech stack accordingly.
  • Continuity matters in M&A. Keeping SPUD's team and brand intact is a reminder that suppliers and partners can push for continuity commitments when their vendors get acquired.

For the broader food and beverage industry, GrubMarket's northward expansion underscores how cross-border eCommerce and enterprise AI are quietly reshaping how food moves from farm to doorstep.
