A nearly century-old dairy brand is proving that scoop-shop expansion still has plenty of runway. On July 17, Oberweis—a proud member of the Hoffmann Family of Companies—opens a new ice cream and dairy store in the fast-growing Orchard Town Center development in Glen Carbon, Illinois, serving guests across Glen Carbon, Edwardsville and the surrounding Southern Illinois communities.
For an industry watching foot traffic, franchise economics and dessert-category demand closely, the move is a clear signal: heritage brands with a strong identity are still finding white space in growing suburban retail corridors.
A Classic Parlor Experience, Reimagined for a Growing Market
The new Oberweis Scoop Shop delivers the brand's signature ice cream parlor experience—hand-scooped super-premium ice cream in cups, cones and freshly baked waffle cones and bowls. Guests can also order hand-dipped milkshakes, specialty sundaes, classic root beer floats, thick Frostbite blended treats and other Oberweis favorites, including its iconic glass-bottled milk.
The Glen Carbon location marks Oberweis' sixth brick-and-mortar store in Missouri and a significant milestone in the brand's broader Midwestern expansion under the leadership of Hoffmann Family of Companies.
To mark the debut, Oberweis is rolling out the Pretzel Party Frostbite, available exclusively at the Glen Carbon location for a limited time. It's built from vanilla soft serve blended with Snickers, pretzels, caramel and chocolate sauce, then finished with a chocolate-dipped pretzel—a smart, buzz-friendly LTO that gives regulars a reason to make the trip.
The Vision: Fun, Familiar and Community-First
"The Orchard Town Center development is thriving and it makes for the perfect family-friendly hub that's become synonymous with the Oberweis brand," said Oberweis CEO Renato DePaolis. "Ice cream simply tastes better when shared with family and friends, and our new store reflects the values we hold dear: a deep appreciation for quality, authentic experiences, and strong community connections. We'll always be that welcoming space for individuals of all ages to enjoy premium ice cream and take a joyful pause in their day."
"Ice cream should be fun," DePaolis continued. "With the new shop, we wanted to bring new energy to the Oberweis brand while staying true to what our guests know and love. From the red and white design cues to the smell of fresh waffle cones, every detail was created to make people feel welcome the moment they walk in."
A Five-Day Grand-Opening Playbook
Rather than a single ribbon-cutting, Oberweis is stacking a full week of themed activations—an approach that operators can study as a launch-marketing model for driving trial and repeat visits:
- Tumbler Day — Friday, July 17: The first 50 guests receive a free Oberweis tumbler, from 2 p.m. until closing.
- Student Day — Saturday, July 18: Any student with a valid student ID gets a sticker and 50% off any Oberweis Frostbite.
- Cow Keychain + Kids Day — Sunday, July 19: Guests receive a free Oberweis Cow Keychain, and can redeem a free kids' scoop and balloons with any purchase.
- First Responder Day — Monday, July 20: First responders who serve the Greater St. Louis area receive 25% off their order.
- Grand Opening + Ribbon Cutting — Tuesday, July 21: Activities run 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with the official ribbon cutting at 4:00 p.m. Guests can spin a prize wheel throughout the day, and the first 100 guests arriving for the ribbon-cutting celebration beginning at 4:00 p.m. will receive an Oberweis tote bag, sunglasses and a $1 scoop.
Why It Matters
For foodservice operators and dessert-category buyers, the Glen Carbon opening is a useful case study in how a legacy brand scales without diluting its identity. Oberweis has anchored a new store inside a high-growth mixed-use development—exactly the kind of family-driven, high-visibility corridor where dessert concepts thrive.
The takeaways for operators are practical:
- Location strategy matters. Planting a shop in a thriving town center puts the brand in front of built-in family foot traffic.
- Limited-time offers drive urgency. A location-exclusive item like the Pretzel Party Frostbite creates a reason to visit now, not later.
- Layered launch promotions build loyalty across segments. Students, families and first responders each get a tailored reason to show up, spreading trial across the community over multiple days.
Oberweis also demonstrates the enduring power of a differentiated product story—award-winning glass-bottled milk and small-batch super-premium ice cream, rooted in a tradition of craftsmanship since 1927. In a crowded frozen-dessert market, that heritage-plus-quality positioning remains a durable competitive edge.
The Bottom Line
The Glen Carbon Scoop Shop begins serving Greater St. Louis and Southern Illinois border communities on July 17, with guests invited to explore the space, sample fresh scoops and celebrate Oberweis' arrival in the Glen Carbon and Edwardsville area.
