Barcelona is one of the most influential food cities on the planet, and the pipeline of chefs, pastry talent, and culinary entrepreneurs coming out of it just got a much bigger platform. On July 17, 2026, Triumph Higher Education Group acquired the Culinary Institute of Barcelona (CIB), folding a well-regarded European school into a fast-growing global network of career-focused culinary education.

For operators and hospitality leaders watching the ongoing scramble for skilled kitchen talent, this is more than an ownership change. It is a signal that culinary training is consolidating into international networks built to move chefs — and their skills — across borders.

What Triumph Acquired

The deal brings CIB into Triumph's culinary portfolio alongside the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts — the largest culinary school brand in the United States — and the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, British Columbia. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Combined, Triumph's network will support more than 8,000 students each year, with over 25,000 alumni and more than 150 faculty and chef instructors across North America and Europe.

Importantly for current students, nothing gets disrupted. CIB will continue operating from its Barcelona campus, keeping its own methodology, faculty, and industry relationships while functioning within Triumph's culinary division.

A Barcelona School Built for Chef-Entrepreneurs

Founded in 2017, CIB has trained more than 1,300 students from over 100 nationalities through professional diplomas and specialization programs spanning haute cuisine, pastry, advanced culinary techniques, healthy cooking, kitchen leadership, and restaurant management.

Its proprietary methodology emphasizes creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship — and the results show it. A large majority of CIB alumni go on to launch their own food businesses. The school maintains internship partnerships with more than 200 renowned restaurants internationally and was named in the "Best Culinary Training Institution in Europe" category at both the 2025 and 2026 World Culinary Awards.

"CIB's approach to culinary education, grounded in creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, fits naturally within the Triumph family philosophy and the Escoffier vision, which blends professional culinary arts with contemporary business training. Auguste Escoffier revolutionized how the world sees professional cooking, and CIB carries that same energy by rethinking what culinary education can be. We welcome CIB's students, instructors, and partners to Triumph as we work together to deliver rewarding, fulfilling career paths for kitchen professionals worldwide."

That's Jack Larson, Chairman, CEO, and President of Triumph Higher Education Group, framing the acquisition as a strategic push into high-demand professional fields — culinary arts and hospitality — while widening international options for students across the network.

New Cross-Border Paths for Students

Rather than a one-way absorption, both organizations plan to build shared pathways. Expect:

  • Study experiences in Spain that build on existing international study options within the Triumph network
  • Expanded online instruction
  • Shared access to an international faculty of chef instructors and industry experts

Josep Gala Micó, co-founder and president of the Culinary Institute of Barcelona, sees the move as a way to scale CIB's founding mission without losing its identity.

"CIB was created to transform culinary education and train a new generation of chef-entrepreneurs, and joining Triumph lets us carry that mission onto the international stage. Our students, instructors, and alumni will keep the methodology and identity that define CIB in Barcelona, while gaining access to broader resources, employer networks, and career paths spanning North America and beyond. We teach our students to be agents of change, and this partnership puts that principle into practice."

Why It Matters

For restaurant owners, foodservice executives, and hospitality operators, the story here is talent — and where it comes from. Spain's gastronomy and culinary-tourism sectors keep expanding, driving demand for skilled professionals and food entrepreneurs across the continent. A larger, connected training network with campuses in the U.S., Canada, and Spain means a deeper, more mobile pool of career-ready chefs and managers.

The practical takeaways for operators:

  • Recruiting reach expands. A network training 8,000+ students a year with 200-plus restaurant internship partners is a hiring pipeline worth building relationships with — especially for operators recruiting across North America and Europe.
  • Entrepreneurial graduates change the market. With a majority of CIB alumni launching their own food businesses, expect more chef-owned concepts, more competition, and more potential collaborators and suppliers.
  • Cross-border training is becoming the norm. Study-abroad tracks and shared online instruction produce staff with international technique and perspective — a differentiator on any menu or floor.

Bottom line: culinary education is scaling like an industry, not a single school, and that reshapes how the F&B business finds and develops its next generation of leaders.

The Bigger Picture

This acquisition lands amid a broader wave of leadership and structural moves reshaping how culinary and hospitality talent is trained and deployed.
