Half a century ago, Vietnam was rebuilding from war, and child malnutrition ran as high as 50–60%. This week, the dairy company born out of that moment stood on a Hanoi stage as a $2.6 billion global brand—and walked away with the nation's highest labor honor for the second time.

On July 23, 2026, Vinamilk celebrated its 50th anniversary and was honored with the Labor Hero title—its second such recognition. CEO Mai Kieu Lien, a former Member of the Party Central Committee and herself a Labor Hero, was awarded the Third-Class Independence Order by Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

On July 20, 2026, General Secretary and President To Lam signed the order awarding the company its second Labor Hero title, citing Vinamilk's innovation, productive excellence, and contributions to national development. The ceremony drew congratulatory tributes from senior figures including To Lam, former General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.

A Five-Decade Rise in Vietnamese Dairy

The anniversary program, titled "50 Years - Serving Vietnamese Aspiration," retraced Vinamilk's journey from restoring the country's first postwar dairy factories to pioneering domestic dairy farming and exporting Vietnamese products worldwide. The milestones tell the story of an industry built largely from scratch:

  • 1976: Founded amid post-war rebuilding, with a mission to ensure children's nutrition, support family health, and build a self-reliant dairy industry.
  • 1989: Produced Vietnam's first domestic powdered milk.
  • Early 1990s: Launched the "White Revolution," laying the foundation for fresh milk self-sufficiency.
  • 1997: First export of Vietnamese dairy products—now reaching 65 countries and territories, with cumulative export value approaching USD 3.9 billion.
  • 2023: A major transformation spanning brand renewal, digitalization, and business restructuring.
  • By end of 2025: More than 300 SKUs across 15 categories, aligned with premiumization, sustainable nutrition, and personalized experiences.

Today, Vinamilk is the only Vietnamese dairy company listed in Fortune's Southeast Asia 500 and ranks among the world's top 36 dairy companies by revenue. Brand Finance places it among the world's 10 most valuable dairy brands, names it the world's most potential dairy brand, and awards it the highest AAA+ brand strength rating.

"Vinamilk was born from the land of Vietnam, nurtured by the people of Vietnam, and is a source of national pride. We are deeply grateful and will always strive to be worthy of that," affirmed Mai Kieu Lien, Vinamilk's CEO.

600,000 Cartons of Milk for Children Nationwide

The company paired its milestone with two charitable commitments totaling 600,000 cartons of milk:

  • 100,000 cartons to the Vietnam Association for Protection of Child Rights.
  • 500,000 cartons to the Vietnam Children's Fund for distribution to 11,000 children nationwide through the "Rise High Vietnam Milk Fund."

That fund has already delivered over 43 million cartons of milk to more than 550,000 Vietnamese children. In recognition of Vinamilk's sustained contributions to child health and nutrition, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan presented the company with a Certificate of Merit.

Innovation Behind the Milestones

Beyond scale, Vinamilk has leaned into R&D to elevate Vietnamese dairy standards, deploying technologies including dual air seal, ultrafiltration, wholesome soy technology, and Vietnam's first 6HMO formula—positioning the portfolio for the premiumization and functional-nutrition demand reshaping the category globally.

Why It Matters

For foodservice executives, procurement directors, and beverage buyers, Vinamilk's story is a case study in how an emerging-market dairy brand builds durable global credibility. A company reaching 65 countries with nearly USD 3.9 billion in cumulative exports and a AAA+ Brand Finance rating is a legitimate sourcing and private-label partner conversation—not a regional footnote.

The practical signals worth watching:

  • Premiumization and functional nutrition are the growth lanes. Vinamilk's 300+ SKUs and investments in 6HMO, ultrafiltration, and soy technology mirror where better-for-you demand is heading. Operators refining dairy and non-dairy menus should track how legacy players are engineering added functionality into everyday staples.
  • Social impact is now a brand asset. The 600,000-carton donation and decades of nutrition programs aren't just goodwill—they're the kind of purpose credentials institutional buyers and hospitality groups increasingly vet in supplier partners.
  • Digitalization pays off. The 2023 restructuring shows even a 50-year-old category leader treats digital transformation as a survival requirement, a reminder for any operator still deferring tech investment.
