The Votes Are In: Hellmann's Crowns the Philly Cheesesteak as America's Sandwich

America has an official bird, an official flower and an official tree. As of this summer, it also has an unofficial sandwich — and it comes loaded with thinly sliced beef, melted cheese and a whole lot of regional swagger.

Hellmann's has officially crowned Pennsylvania's Philly Cheesesteak as "America's Sandwich," capping a nationwide bracket that pitted all 50 states against one another in a celebration of the regional favorites that define local food culture. The campaign, timed to America's 250th birthday, turned hometown food pride into a genuine national conversation.

How the Cheesesteak Took the Crown

The numbers tell the story of just how much fans cared. More than 10,000 sandwich lovers cast nearly 100,000 votes over weeks of spirited campaigning, rallying behind their hometown heroes as regional rivalries spilled across social feeds. When the dust settled, Pennsylvania's iconic cheesesteak emerged on top.

"America has official symbols for its bird, flower and tree. It was about time we settled the sandwich," said Jessica Grigoriou, SVP of Marketing, Condiments at Unilever North America. "At Hellmann's, we know sandwiches have a special way of bringing people together. America chose the Philly Cheesesteak, and we'll be celebrating it the Hellmann's way: with a creamy spread of America's number one mayonnaise."

Fifty states entered. One sandwich took the crown. And Pennsylvania can now officially — if playfully — claim bragging rights, with Hellmann's promising to bring the mayo.

Why It Matters

On the surface this is a fun, feel-good bracket. Look closer and it's a sharp playbook for how heritage food and beverage brands can drive engagement without a heavy media spend — a model operators and marketers should study.

  • Regional pride is a cheap, powerful engagement engine. By framing the contest around state-by-state loyalty, Hellmann's got fans to campaign for the brand, generating nearly 100,000 votes largely through word-of-mouth and social sharing. For restaurants and CPG brands, tapping local identity is a proven way to earn earned media.
  • Cultural moments create menu opportunities. A national "America's Sandwich" conversation is a ready-made hook. Operators can lean into the cheesesteak halo — LTO cheesesteaks, cheesesteak-inspired specials, or a spread-forward twist — while the trend is hot and searchable.
  • Condiments are quietly claiming the center of the plate. Hellmann's is using a sandwich campaign to reinforce that mayonnaise is a hero ingredient, not an afterthought. For foodservice buyers, that's a reminder that spreads and sauces are increasingly where perceived value and craveability live.
  • Anniversary and milestone tie-ins travel. Anchoring the campaign to America's 250th gave it a timely, shareable reason to exist. Brands with a relevant milestone — theirs or the country's — have a built-in content calendar.

The practical takeaway: you don't need a Super Bowl budget to spark a national food conversation. You need a clear, opinion-provoking premise, a low-friction way for fans to participate, and a payoff that's true to your brand.

A Signature Sandwich, a Marketing Win

Whether or not you agree the cheesesteak deserved the title (and half the country will surely argue otherwise), Hellmann's turned a debate everyone has an opinion on into weeks of free-flowing brand affinity. That's the kind of participatory, culture-first marketing that keeps legacy brands relevant against digitally native upstarts.
