FONSECA, LEADING PORT PRODUCER, LAUNCHES BIN 27 LIMITED EDITION “ARTIST SERIES”

Holiday Partnership Celebrates Accomplishments of Waterkeeper Alliance

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – The Port house of Fonseca, renowned as one of the world’s top producers of vintage Ports, is debuting its first, limited edition “Artist Series,” a special release of Bin 27 available for sale from October through December 2012.

This year’s label features a design by Sebastião Rodrigues (1929-1997), a revered Portuguese graphic designer whose work drew on the country’s rich graphic traditions.  Depicting a Portuguese fisherman in a traditional fishing boat – and evoking the Douro River, which has played a key role in the Port trade for centuries – this image was widely used in 1950s tourism post cards.

Charity-minded, Fonseca Bin 27 is partnering with Waterkeeper Alliance, a global organization dedicated to maintaining clean waterways worldwide, by donating $15,000 to Waterkeeper to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the passing of the Clean Water Act. Head Winemaker David Guimaraens praised the partnership stating, “Environmental stewardship is the only way to sustain the future of viticulture in our historic Douro River Valley, and protecting the water is integral to preserving this region.  Bin 27 is a Reserve Ruby Port, created more than a century ago as my family’s personal reserve, and was made available to the public in 1972.  Continuing my family’s winemaking legacy would be impossible without long-term stewardship of land and water.”  Waterkeeper Alliance Executive Director Marc Yaggi celebrated the support, adding, “The proceeds from this campaign will underwrite our work to make waterways swimmable, drinkable, and fishable worldwide.”

Committed to quality through innovation, Bin 27 abandoned pump-over fermentation in 2001 and adopted a system of proprietary piston fermentation which replicates the pressing motion of the most sophisticated wine press:  the human foot.  This perennial holiday favorite, Bin 27 is a blend of premium reserve wines aged for 3-4 years in neutral oak vats and is prized for its full, velvety texture and luscious blackcurrant, chocolate, and cherry notes.  The suggested retail price for Bin 27 “Artist Series” is $19.99.

Fonseca is recognized throughout the Douro region as a leader in sustainable mountain viticultural practices, and was an early proponent of organic viticulture.  In 2009, the team was awarded the nation’s Biodiversity Prize in recognition of their leading role in the Douro valley.
