Anchor Bar, Buffalo’s legendary eatery and foodie hot-spot, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their most prized creation – the Buffalo chicken wing on March 6. The event was held today at the original Anchor Bar, the same spot where the wing was invented in 1964.
“Today is a great day for celebration,” said Anchor Bar franchise President Ivano Toscani. “50 years ago on this date the chicken wing was created here at Anchor Bar, forever marking Buffalo, N.Y., home to one of America’s favorite foods.”
The story of the Buffalo chicken wing began when Dominic Bellissimo, son of Anchor Bar owners Frank and Teressa Bellisimo, was bartending late one night in March 1964, when a group of friends came in for a drink. As expected, the guys got hungry, so Dominic asked his mother to fix something. Teressa went into the kitchen and found some chicken wings that were too exquisite for soup stock. She deep fried them, tossed them in a spicy red sauce recipe and served them up with a side of blue cheese and celery sticks.
Today, 50 years later, the Anchor Bar serves up more than 70,000 pounds of chicken per month, and its bottled wing sauce now retails in over 5,000 supermarkets worldwide.
The Anchor Bar is proudly Franchising Restaurants with current locations at The Buffalo International Airport; Darien Lake Amusement Park in Darien, N.Y.; Hamilton, Ontario; and a location in Temecula, Calif., soon to come.
