ONE MARKET ADDS NEW YORK-STYLE DELICATESSEN

One Market owner Michael (“Mike”) Dellar, who grew up eating Jewish food, has wanted to open a deli for as long as he can remember. Now, thanks in part to One Market’s successful Rosh Hashanah menu and economic conditions that demand a fair amount of chutzpah, Dellar and Chef/Partner Mark Dommen have launched Mark ‘n Mike’s, a New York-style deli that will operate as a pop-up within One Market. Opening tomorrow, October 7, the deli offers an extensive menu of Jewish comfort food for takeout and delivery. Mark ‘n Mike’s will be the first restaurant in San Francisco to offer Emily Winston’s popular Berkeley-made Boichik bagels for sandwiches and schmears.

Michael’s mother, Harriett, was one of the best Jewish cooks around, and as a boy, Michael rode his bike to Nate ‘n Al’s delicatessen in Beverly Hills for thick pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on double-baked rye bread. These were early influences on what would become Dellar’s successful career as a restaurateur, but it wasn’t until 2012 that Dellar, along with business partners John Schwartz and Dennis Berkowitz, leaned into his roots with the launch of the Pastranomy food truck in Napa. Still, it was Michael’s dream to create a San Francisco-based deli with a fine dining chef.

Enter Mark Dommen, who came to One Market in 2004 after having spent several years honing his culinary skills in New York. Living on the Upper West Side, Mark was a regular at Zabar’s and sampled his way through New York’s great Jewish food spots: Carnegie Deli, Katz’s and Russ & Daughters. At One Market, Michael and Mark have worked together to create memorable Passover menus and, more recently, a wildly successful Rosh Hashanah meal kit. The sophisticated take on matzo ball soup that Mark created for One Market will also be a signature item at Mark ‘n Mike’s. The deli, which begins as a month-long experiment, is the culmination of Mark and Mike’s longtime partnership.

“Mark and I have been fiddling around with this idea for a long time, and our goal is to bring the essence of New York deli food to San Francisco in a sophisticated yet accessible way,” said Dellar. “We’re doubly blessed to be the first location in San Francisco to offer Boichik bagels. Like us, Emily is dedicated to creating a quality product in the New York style.”

On the menu are New York-style deli favorites like hot pastrami, smoked brisket on twice-baked rye or challah, thinly sliced cold-smoked Bodega Bay salmon on Boichik bagels, Mark’s matzo ball soup, dill pickles, house-made potato salad and coleslaw, and meats by the pound, as well as signature sandwiches that include Pastrami Reuben ($18.95), Dellar’s special No. 18 with pastrami, Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing ($18.50) and the triple decker Mile High on rye ($25.95). The menu also boasts a “Big Fresser” package feast for the family that includes four kinds of meat, cheese, potato salad, cole slaw, breads, pickles, rugelach and macaroons for $125.

Mark ‘n Mike’s is located inside One Market Restaurant at 1 Market Street in San Francisco. It is open for takeout and delivery. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

One Market continues to offer its classic three-course meals of Prime Rib, King Salmon and Fried Chicken, as well as half-price wines and cocktails for takeout and delivery on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
