Robert Hall Winery Exploring the Diversity of Paso Robles with Small-Lot Varietal Program

Founding winemaker Don Brady is finding new favorites by sourcing from new vineyards

Robert Hall Winery Exploring the Diversity of Paso Robles with Small-Lot Varietal ProgramRobert Hall Winery in Paso Robles, CA is leading a wine revolution. Founding winemaker, Don Brady, and the winemaking team are on a quest to discover more about this incredible wine region and what it can produce. Brady has been making award-winning Paso wines for over 20 years and is now releasing three wines that showcase his years of experience and passion for this remarkable region.

“The diversity of the appellations throughout Paso Robles gives us a rich and complex slate of fruit to select from and turn into world-class wine,” said Brady. “We want to spark new interest and conversation with these wines and we can’t wait to hear what people think about our newest releases.”

For the first time since its founding in 2001, Robert Hall is making a single-varietal Vermentino. The 2017 Cavern Select Vermentino is an Italian varietal not widely planted in Paso Robles. Brady was searching for a crisp, fresh wine indicative of Paso Robles but true to the French / Corsican style from where the grape is extensively planted. All of the fruit comes from the El Pomar appellation and was selected from an area tucked in the hills behind the winery. Two hundred twenty-nine cases were produced and the wine is only available in the tasting room.

The 2016 Cavern Select Mourvèdre is another rare find for the Paso region. Once the 2016 red wines were finalized, two orphan barrels of Mourvèdre remained.  The winemaking team couldn’t bring themselves to blend the wine away, and the decision was made to produce an extremely limited volume of wine.  The 2016 vintage is incredibly balanced with an excellent depth of color and wonderful flavor maturity derived from small, intense berries and few clusters per vine. This fruit comes from the highly-acclaimed El Pomar AVA. Fifty cases are available and will only be released to club members.

For the 2016 Cavern Select GSM, (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre), Brady featured three of his favorite Rhône wines from the 2016 vintage. This blend is 34% Grenache, 34% Syrah and 32% Mourvèdre. The wine is reminiscent of a previous wine club favorite, the Pape de Robles, but incorporates new vineyards in the Adelaida, El Pomar, Creston and Santa Margarita Ranch districts. Each wine underwent malolactic fermentation individually in barrel and was then blended and returned to French Oak puncheons with 50% new oak. Four hundred sixteen cases were produced and the wine is only available in the tasting room.

Limited samples of the 2017 Cavern Select Vermentino ($32), the 2016 Cavern Select Mourvèdre ($45) and the 2016 Cavern Select GSM ($45) are available to qualified media.
