Here's a play every restaurant operator should be studying: turn your most iconic product into a reason for the whole community to show up—and give back. That's exactly what Shipley Donuts is doing this fall.
The Texas donut icon has reopened registration for its annual Donut Dash, set for Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. The family-friendly event pairs 10K, 5K and kids' races with a clear mission: fighting childhood hunger through Kids' Meals, a local nonprofit that delivers free, healthy meals to food-insecure preschoolers across Greater Houston.
What's on the Menu for Race Day
The morning is built for both serious runners and families looking for a feel-good outing. The schedule breaks down like this:
- 7 a.m. — 10K start
- 8 a.m. — 5K start
- 9:45 a.m. — Kids Dash
Every participant receives a donut-inspired race shirt, an all-new donut-themed finisher medal and complimentary donuts. Runners can grab Shipley donuts and mini kolaches along the route and at the finish line, then sip new cold brew coffee during post-race festivities—all while supplies last.
Turning Fandom Into Impact
What began as a fun community race has quickly become one of Houston's most impactful charitable events. Last year's Donut Dash drew a record 1,500-plus runners, raising critical support for Kids' Meals.
"After the incredible response to the Shipley Donut Dash in 2025, we're bringing this event back bigger this fall," said Flynn Dekker, Shipley Donuts CEO. "What started as a fun, community race has quickly evolved into a meaningful event rallying our hometown around the fight against food insecurity. This year, we're building upon the momentum to deepen our impact, engage more participants and continue to support Kids' Meals' mission to feed preschoolers in Houston."
Shipley and Adrenaline Special Events will donate a portion of all registration fees to Kids' Meals, which delivers free, healthy meals to the doorsteps of more than 13,000 food-insecure, preschool-aged children across Greater Houston every weekday. Every $2 donated provides one healthy meal for a child.
"Childhood hunger continues to affect thousands of families across Houston, and this community's generosity keeps stepping up to meet that need," said Beth Braniff Harp, CEO of Kids' Meals. "We're proud to stand alongside Shipley Donuts again this fall as the Donut Dash grows into one of Houston's most impactful charitable events, moving us closer to a hunger-free future for the children who need it most."
Why It Matters
For food, beverage and hospitality operators, the Donut Dash is a case study in doing well by doing good. Cause marketing that's authentically tied to a brand's core product—here, donuts, kolaches and coffee—builds community loyalty in a way paid advertising rarely can. It converts a beloved product into repeat foot traffic, positive local press and genuine goodwill.
A few takeaways for operators watching this playbook:
- Anchor the cause to your identity. Shipley didn't invent a generic charity run; it built a "Donut Dash" that puts its signature products front and center along the route and at the finish line.
- Partner with a credible local nonprofit. Aligning with Kids' Meals gives the effort measurable impact ($2 = one meal) and a trusted community voice.
- Bring in an events pro. Working with a full-service producer like Adrenaline Special Events lets the brand focus on hospitality while the logistics get handled professionally.
- Make it repeatable. Year-over-year growth—from a first-year turnout to 1,500-plus runners—shows how a signature event compounds brand equity over time.
With more than 390 franchised and company-owned restaurants across 13 states, Shipley—ranked No. 134 on Entrepreneur's Franchise 500® 2026 list and No. 142 on the Technomic 2026 Top 500—demonstrates that even at scale, hyper-local community engagement remains a powerful differentiator.
