Buffalo Gets Its First Communal Food Market

Buffalo Gets Its First Communal Food Market

Opening tomorrow on Main Street in the historic market Arcade Complex is EXPO, an 8,000 square foot craft food and beverage market featuring some of the city’s best chefs and restaurateurs. The building originally built in 1892 by architects Green & Wicks features some of the space’s original character, marrying an old world feel with modern finishes.

An iconic city, known for hosting the “Pan American Exposition”  back in 1901, EXPO celebrates the heartbeat and passion that once again lives in Buffalo. Now filled with new local businesses, entrepreneurs and ideas, Nick Sinatra, owner and founder of Sinatra & Company Real Estate (the building’s owner) says, “EXPO was inspired by the communal table trend we’re seeing in some bigger cities, like Chelsea Market or Gotham West in New York, where people are opting for a more social dining experience.”

EXPO’s modern interior pays homage to the City of Light (past and present), featuring glass panels reminiscent of Niagara Falls, a green wall celebrating Frederick Law Olmsted (landscape architect), 8-watt light bulbs similar to those that illuminated the Pan American Exposition, a mural by local artist Kimberly Halavin, and three 12-foot high murals by local artist Casey William Milbrand that juxtapose the Buffalo of today with extraordinary moments of its past.

Upon opening, foodies can indulge in food and drink from Bobby Alfman’s, Crush Juicery, Gypsy Bohemian Grove Bar, Newbury Street, Mercato by Osteria 166 and Sun Roll by Sun Restaurant. They plan to feature 24 tap beers, custom cocktails and a selection of craft beers. Each restaurant operates out of a designated stall and holds a shared interest in a large, commercial kitchen and communal seating area.

EXPO will be managed by Crush Hospitality Concepts.
