Clyde May’s Distillery Project

The official state spirit of Alabama, Clyde May’s whiskey, is one big step closer to bringing their production back home. Conecuh Brands, LLC, owners of the Clyde May’s brand, has finalized the rezoning of approximately 76 acres of farmland in Troy, Al. to a tourist destination district.

Luckett & Farley, a Louisville, Ky.-based architecture, interior design, and engineering firm, submitted the site plan to Troy officials and with their approval, is moving forward with schematic design documents.

The Clyde May’s experience will have a variety of activities to delight whiskey aficionados and abstainers alike, with its wandering trails, rolling hills, apple orchard, retail, event space, and future additions of a museum, amphitheater, and guest cabins.

Luckett & Farley is familiar with designing an exceptional distillery experience, with decades of experience serving the nation’s top bourbon brands. The firm is working to create an environment that utilizes the Alabama vernacular in a modern way. The interiors combine wood and leather with crisp lines, large windows, and breezeways. In a nod to the hint of apple in Clyde’s signature Alabama whiskey, the firm has designed custom lighting from apple baskets.

“This picturesque property could not be a more perfect place to build our Clyde May’s Distillery. Rolling hills, lakes, streams, woods…. all come together in a spectacular setting that will harken visitors back to the day and place where Clyde first honed his whiskey making craft.” Roy Danis, CEO, Conecuh Ridge Distillery

Clyde May’s capital investment in this project is estimated at $15 million. The Company expects to ultimately have more than 30 full-time employees and to bring over 50,000 visitors annually to Troy, helping to bolster the college town as a regional destination.

Clyde May’s is planning to have a ceremonial groundbreaking in the second quarter of 2020 and hopes to soon release more plans for their vision of the site.

Once the illicit product of an Alabama moonshiner trying to stay under the radar, recent years have seen the brand grow into a top national whiskey. Bringing Clyde May’s story and tradition to a permanent home near the hills where Clyde hid his original still will help cement the brand and his legacy.
