Celebrating Culinary Excellence in NYC

The Food Education Fund (FEF), in partnership with Colavita, is proud to present the 8th Annual Colavita Culinary Challenge, set to take place on April 30, 2026, at the prestigious Platform by the James Beard Foundation. This esteemed event showcases the culinary prowess of high school chefs from New York City, offering them a unique opportunity to hone their skills and compete for a culinary journey to Italy.

This year’s competition features an impressive panel of judges, including renowned chefs Amanda Freitag, Jassimran Singh, Calvin Eng, and Clare Reichenbach, the CEO of the James Beard Foundation. These industry leaders will evaluate the young culinary talents based on taste, presentation, creativity, ingredient usage, timing, and sanitation.

Empowering the Next Generation of Chefs

At the heart of the Colavita Culinary Challenge is the mission to empower young culinary talents and bridge the gap between education and industry. This year, FEF has introduced a full-circle mentorship program, pairing finalists with former champions who now shine in some of New York City’s top kitchens. This initiative not only provides guidance but also fosters a legacy of excellence.

Finalist teams from Food and Finance High School and Francis Lewis High School have diligently worked under the mentorship of:

  • Chef Anthony Trabasas – Sous Chef, Cove, and 2021 competition winner
  • Chef Citlaly Hernandez – Sous Chef, K’Far, and 2019 competition winner
  • Chef Jade Atkins – Pastry Cook, Madea, and 2021 competition winner

Giovanni Colavita, CEO of Colavita, expressed his excitement, saying, “Watching these students evolve from young enthusiasts into confident creators is the highlight of our year. By pairing our finalists with mentors who once stood in their very shoes as past winners, we are creating a legacy of excellence. We are honored to provide the premium ingredients and global inspiration that help these students turn their culinary dreams into reality.”

A Culinary Journey through Italy Awaits

The stakes are high for the competing teams. The winning duo will not only receive an all-expense-paid culinary immersion through Italy, hosted by Colavita, but will also be awarded a $2,500 scholarship each, managed by the Food Education Fund. This prestigious recognition highlights the potential for these young chefs to take their culinary aspirations to new heights.

Participating in this competition is a transformative experience for these aspiring chefs. They learn to cook with Colavita’s premium Italian pantry staples, enabling them to showcase their creativity and technical skills. Each dish is a reflection of their hard work and commitment to culinary excellence.

The Importance of Educational Support in Culinary Arts

The Food Education Fund plays a critical role in enriching the lives of underserved, culinary-focused public high school students in New York City. Through hands-on learning and internship placements, FEF is committed to empowering students to pursue sustainable careers in the culinary arts. This support is essential in nurturing the next generation of chefs and restaurant leaders.

As the culinary landscape evolves, initiatives like the Colavita Culinary Challenge become even more vital. They provide a platform for young talent to shine, while also emphasizing the importance of mentorship and education in achieving success in the competitive food and beverage industry.
