Southern Efficiency, A Whiskey Bar and Southern Food Counter from Derek Brown, Opens in ShawThis Saturday, Derek Brown, with Travis Croxton, will open the third in his trilogy of bars: Southern Efficiency, a whiskey bar and southern food counter located at 1841 7th Street, NW.

Hours:

  • Tuesday-Thursday 5pm-12:30am
  • Friday-Saturday 5pm-1:30am
  • Sunday 5pm-11:30pm

Named after a quote often ascribed to John F. Kennedy, speaking to the District’s political handicaps, “Washington is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm,” Southern Efficiency is a haven for Southern whiskey lovers, highlighting the diversity of Southern whiskey and food. Columbia Room veteran and former bar manager at Rappahannock Oyster Bar, J.P. Fetherston, will helm the bar and Julien Shapiro, of Eat the Rich, will run the kitchen.

Says Derek Brown, “We’re excited to have added a new bar to our family, and one with great talent and a focused mission: to serve people good food and whiskey.”

Apart from a selection of over thirty Southern Whiskies, Southern Efficiency will also serve jarred-cocktails such as the Stone Fence and a Smoked Cola & White Whiskey on tap. We will also have fresh sodas, such as a homemade apple-celery soda, and Southern beers and ciders.

The food at Southern Efficiency is inspired by Southern diners and lunch counters, and will include fried catfish, deviled eggs and peanut soup among other dishes. There will be both snacks and entrees but service will be counter-side and casual.

Our grand opening is Saturday, December 21st with a soft opening on Friday, December 20th and preview classes for the public Wednesday, December 18th and Thursday, December 19th. A description of the class is below:

  • Southern Whiskey 101 $45
  • Wednesday & Thursday
  • December 18th &19th 6-7:30 & 8-9:30 P.M.

Even though Bourbon is the South’s most popular whiskey, Southern Whiskey encompasses a broad range of producers, styles and places from Bourbon to Single Malts, Kentucky to the Carolinas. In this class, Derek Brown and JP Fetherston will walk students through a tasting of classic and unusual whiskies encompassing the full breadth of tradition and experimentation, covering the history, production and culture of Southern whiskey.

Attendees will leave with a newfound love of one of America’s great traditions (if they don’t already have it) and get a preview of the new whiskey bar, Southern Efficiency, which is the culmination of Derek Brown’s trilogy of bars in Shaw alongside Mockingbird Hill and Eat the Rich.
