When an international scientific body pins a "World Dairy Capital" plaque on a Chinese city, dairy buyers everywhere should pay attention. The center of gravity in global milk is shifting — and the 2026 World Dairy Conference just made it official.

The conference opened August 1 in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, hosted by Yili Group under the theme "Technology-driven, partnership-oriented, jointly building a sustainable global dairy ecosystem." The event drew leaders of international industry associations, prominent scientists, and senior executives from across the global dairy value chain.

Pan Gang, Chairman and President of Yili Group, delivers a keynote as Hohhot is named World Dairy Capital at the 2026 World Dairy Conference.

Hohhot Crowned the 'World Dairy Capital'

At the opening ceremony, the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) formally presented the city of Hohhot with the "World Dairy Capital" plaque along with a commemorative award.

Dr. Pavinee Chinachoti, Executive President of IUFoST, said the honor recognizes the city's persistent efforts to advance the dairy industry. She added that the distinction is also meant to spur pioneering companies like Yili to push the global healthy-food industry forward and accelerate development toward a future built on technology leadership and shared success.

Yili's Vision: 'Shared Value, Mutual Harmony'

Pan Gang, Chairman and President of Yili Group, delivered a keynote titled "Shared Value, Mutual Harmony, Building a New Global Dairy Ecosystem." Against a backdrop of rapid technological change, supply-chain restructuring, climate pressures, and shifting consumer demands, he laid out Yili's strategic vision.

The task of a glass of milk is not only to nourish life, but also to realize "World Integrally Sharing Health."

Pan Gang argued that real innovation is "never an island, but an entire continent," and highlighted how Yili pools global dairy know-how to build a strong innovation network. On digital transformation, he described digital intelligence not as a solo performance but as a "symphony" across the entire value chain — and said Yili is driving vertical and horizontal integration to build a data-intelligence-based ecosystem end to end.

He closed by inviting partners worldwide to join a journey of shared value and mutual harmony, using the strength of dairy to reinforce the foundation of human health and advance global well-being.

New Data Platforms and 10 Breakthrough Innovations

The ceremony also marked the official launch of the "China (Global) Dairy Data Intelligent Hub" and the "Global Dairy High-Quality Datasets Factory." In addition, China's National Technology Innovation Center for Dairy (NTICD) unveiled its ten most important innovation achievements of 2026.

Those advances span key areas of the modern dairy playbook, including:

  • Dairy cow breeding
  • Feed reduction and substitution technologies
  • Probiotic strains for breast-milk research
  • Large-scale production of lactoferrin
  • Intelligent end-to-end testing systems
  • High-quality packaging recycling

Together, the group framed these technologies as evidence of a strong commitment to high-quality, sustainable development across the global dairy industry.

Why It Matters

For dairy processors, foodservice procurement directors, and institutional buyers, this is more than a ribbon-cutting. Two signals stand out.

First, data infrastructure is becoming a competitive moat in dairy. A "Data Intelligent Hub" and a "High-Quality Datasets Factory" point to a future where sourcing, quality assurance, and traceability run on shared, standardized data — the same direction retail-intelligence and AI plays are pushing across F&B. Buyers who understand how their suppliers use digital intelligence to manage supply and quality will negotiate and forecast better.

Second, the innovation list is a procurement watchlist. Lactoferrin at scale, feed-substitution technologies, and advanced packaging recycling touch the exact levers operators care about — functional ingredients, input costs, and sustainability credentials that increasingly influence menu and shelf decisions. If you buy dairy or better-for-you ingredients, these are the developments to track over the next 18 months.

The practical takeaway: sustainable, technology-led sourcing is no longer a nice-to-have story for the marketing deck. It's becoming the baseline expectation across the global dairy value chain, and the suppliers investing in it now are the ones who will set terms later.

The Bigger Picture

Yili's push fits a broader wave of consolidation and modernization sweeping the dairy category worldwide.
