Undurraga Winemaker Recognized By Drinks Business

Undurraga Winemaker Recognized By Drinks BusinessRafael Urrejola, winemaker at Undurraga, was recently recognized by Drinks Business magazine in the January 2014 issue for being one of the top thirty “young winemakers from around the world making a name for themselves as the future of the industry,” according to the publication.

One of his primary successes was the development of the Terroir Hunter, or T.H. brand, an innovative concept that transcends conventional winemaking boundaries in its search for non-traditional terroirs across the rich and diverse Chilean geography. The results of this particular journey are wines that fully express the land from where they are sourced.

The T.H. series has garnered some outstanding ratings, including a 91 from The Wine Advocate for the T.H. Riesling San Antonio 2012 and a 91 from Wine & Spirits for the 2012 T.H. Leyda Pinot Noir.

According to Marybeth Bentwood, Executive Director of Wines of Chile USA, “this award is another affirmation that Chile produces world class wines that express a sense of place, and an acknowledgement of how the newly developed region of San Antonio and Leyda are producing some fabulous cool climate wines.”

About Undurraga
Don Francisco Undurraga, an enterprising man in the 19th century, was one of the pioneers of winemaking in Chile and founder of Viña Undurraga. With plants he brought over personally from France and Germany and under the supervision of the renowned French viticulturist M. Pressac, he developed the first vineyards in the Santa Ana Estate, which was named in honor of his wife Doña Ana Fernández Iñiguez. This estate, located in Talagante, 34 kilometers from Santiago, in the heart of the Maipo Valley, received its first plantations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer in 1885 and by 1903, the first shipments were being made to the USA.
