INTRODUCING PINSTRIPE: A NEW, YET TRANSPORTIVE COCKTAIL BAR & LOUNGE AT VICEROY BALI

Set amid lush jungle with the backdrop of Ubud’s rice fields, and just a stone’s throw from central Ubud, Viceroy Bali welcomes Pinstripe, named for the bold symbol of both fashion and cocktail culture, popularized during the Prohibition era, and an evolution of the cocktail destination Apéritif Bar that previously occupied the space. Helmed by Balinese native and Head Mixologist Panji Wisrawan, Pinstripe offers a distinct and signature menu within the Ubud cocktail scene, concocting libations inspired by iconic fashion, cultural moments and figures of the 1920s & 1930s while infusing locally sourced tropical flavors.

Bali’s newest and most glamorous destination to drink distinctly atop the Valley of the Kings, a retreat once favored by royals, Pinstripe, offers world-class Balinese hospitality in an elegant, speakeasy-like setting. Opulently decorated in marble, dark woods, and bronze elements, the tone is set for a sophisticated cocktail sojourn that transports guests back to a time of frivolity and grandeur.

The new cocktail anthology is called “Clairvoyant,” inspired by the extraordinary life of Miguel “El Chamaco” Covarrubias. His artistic talent and cultural insight played a significant role in documenting and promoting the Harlem Renaissance, ensuring its lasting impact on the cultural landscape of the United States and beyond. A decade later, his book, Island of Bali, contributed to the 1930s Bali craze in New York. His contribution to both worlds inspired Pinstripe Bar’s first edition cocktail anthology that will transports guests through the much-loved bygone eras of the 1920s and 30s. Pinstripe Cocktail menu will have 4 different cocktail sets: ‘Harlem Renaissance,’ ‘Bali Sojourn,’ ‘Pinstripe Signature,’ and ‘The Sober Guide.’ ‘Harlem Renaissance’ focuses on drinks that inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’ time in New York during the 1920s, drinks are inspired by some famous people whose caricature were made by himself such as Al Capone (The Scarface), Charlie Chaplin (The Tramp), & Mary Pickford (The Sweetheart), or the movement that promoted by him with The Harlem (obviously inspired by the Harlem Renaissance), or by he himself with The Clairvoyant. ‘Bali Sojourn’ uses local ingredients and bright flavor combinations reminiscent of the destination, mostly inspired by his Sojourn in Bali during in the 1930s, cocktails are inspired by some of the amazing persona such as Walter Spies (The Primitivist), Collin Mcphee (The Composer), The Bumblebee (I Ketut Marya, the Famous Balinese Dancer), The Prince (Cok Agung Soekawati) and of course inspired by his wife that he took for honeymoon to Bali, Rosa Rolanda (The Dancer). ‘Pinstripe Signature’ showcases a twist on some of the classics using local and unique ingredients, while ‘The Sober Guide’ offers creative and delicious non-alcoholic options. One of the standout cocktails is The Clairvoyant which is made with Sake, Watermelon and Peanut Butter, as well as Tamarind and Mezcal, featuring Home Grown Butterfly Pea Flower.

“In transforming the bar and cocktail menu for Pinstripe Bar, I was inspired by the lively and artistic 1930’s in Ubud, Bali’s history, of which Miguel Covarrubias played an influential role, just like he had in Harlem the decade prior. This story is something I want to share to our dear patrons at Pinstripe Bar, weaving local history and stories from afar, into an inspired and intricate menu of exotic cocktails.” said Panji Wisrawan, Head Mixologist at Pinstripe. “The lounge offers a cocktail experience that is unique to Ubud and we’ve crafted a menu to meet the elevated and transportive style of the space.”

Pinstripe earned its name from the bold symbol of both fashion and cocktail culture, which was popularized during the Prohibition era. When the restrictions surrounding alcohol in the United States led to the expansion and evolution of cocktail culture globally, pinstripes and cocktails were catapulted around the world, with Bali being no exception. A diaspora of bartenders seeking work outside of their homeland resulted in global influence across both cocktail culture and fashion. Fashion is close to the heart of the Viceroy Bali story – the hotel’s founder, Margaret Bainbridge was a fashion designer herself and her husband Otto Syrowatka also a fashion enthusiast, wore pinstripe suits to take Margaret out on dates.

The bar program also showcases the resort’s focus on sustainability, with ingredients for cocktails repurposed from the kitchen as part of the property’s zero-waste offerings. For a heightened experience, guests can book a cocktail masterclass with Head Mixologist Panji Wisrawan which includes a tour of the property’s garden, tips & tricks from the trade, and high-caliber cocktails and canapés.

In addition to the impressive beverage offerings, Pinstripe also offers a menu of apéritifs that recognize fine global haute cuisine, with a hint of Indonesian influence, drawing on flavors of the old Spice Islands. The lounge is also home to a cigar humidor featuring a carefully curated selection of some of the finest cigars in Asia.
