Tyson K-12 Awards $25,000 in Grant Funds to Seven School Foodservice Teams through its Great Grant Giveaway

Tyson K-12 is pleased to announce seven K-12 school foodservice teams were awarded a piece of $25,000 in grant funding through the company’s Great Grant Giveaway program. Since its inception in 2015, Tyson K-12 has awarded more than $100,000 in grant funding to schools.

Grant recipients can use the funds to purchase equipment or materials that can help enhance their foodservice operations. Diane Drooger of David Douglas School in Oregon said their $2,500 grant funds will likely be used to purchase additional bakers’ racks to support to-go meals for students.

“Earlier this month, we realized we would need tall bakers’ racks for our kitchen since our school district will be doing online learning through December, possibly longer. We will have meal pick-up areas for families at our schools, in addition to bus stops – the additional racks will really help our staff,” said Drooger.

  • Paula Short of Stryker Local in Ohio
  • Sara Lisson of Crowley schools in Texas

$2,500 Great Grant Giveaway recipients include:

  • Casey Partian of Marshall County schools in Alabama
  • Diane Drooger of David Douglas schools in Oregon
  • Jean Meyer of Couch schools in Missouri
  • Nanique Gheridian of Palm Beach County schools in Florida

While the Great Grant Giveaway typically takes place in-person during the School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference in the Tyson K-12 booth, this year looked different due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the Tyson K-12 team decided to hold the grant giveaway virtually.

“This school year is one like no other – operators are working hard to ensure their students have safe access to meals while also adapting to increased safety measures, and in some cases budget shortfalls,” said Brook Thomas, Tyson K-12 Channel Marketing Manager.

During “In the Kitchen with Tyson K-12”, a virtual event held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 on the Tyson K-12 Schools Facebook page, the Tyson K-12 team provided educational information around packaging support and menu inspiration and awarded grant funding to seven schools who were chosen at random from those who registered and attended the virtual sessions.

“Our team always strives to provide tangible resources to support operators and their mission to feed students,” said Thomas. “This year was no different – it was important to us to provide both educational and other resources to help operators navigate this unprecedented school year.”
